HISTORY OF CAPERS MONTESSORI

A vision took form in Montessori House of Little Capers 17 years ago. Founded by a dedicated Montessorian, it began as a preschool where every child, with their unique pace and curiosity, could unfurl their potential. As the years passed, the school emerged as a testament to the Montessori philosophy's timeless relevance, which places emphasis on individual growth and discovery.

With a desire to offer more specialized care and attention to children with unique needs, we decided to introduce a special needs section. This was not just an addition, but the establishment of one of the first Special Needs Montessori programs in the country. This initiative was driven by a simple belief: that every child, regardless of challenges, should have an environment that respects their individual learning pace.
Among the guiding hands at our school is Lynn Wong, who brought with her over a decade of experience in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy. Her understanding of ABA helped us thoughtfully combine its structured techniques with the Montessori approach. This integration aims to provide a balanced and suitable learning environment, accommodating the varied needs of our students.

At Capers Montessori, our Early Intevention Montessori (EIM) program was introduced as an answer to a significant need. Traditional Montessori pedagogy has always emphasized individuality, allowing children to explore and learn at a pace that's uniquely theirs. This philosophy seamlessly aligns with the needs of children who require specialized attention, ensuring they aren't rushed or left behind but are given ample opportunity to shine in their own light.

For children with special needs, the Montessori environment—characterized by its tactile materials, structured activities, and a focus on self-directed learning—offers a therapeutic and comforting space. It respects their unique learning curves and fosters a sense of independence and achievement. However, while Montessori offers a beautiful canvas, it's the integration of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) that adds the detailed brushstrokes. ABA is a therapeutic approach known for its efficacy in teaching skills and reducing problematic behaviors, especially in individuals with autism and other developmental disorders. The structure, repetition, and reinforcement techniques central to ABA serve as invaluable tools, especially when trying to impart essential life and academic skills to children with special needs.

By weaving ABA strategies into the Montessori framework, we ensure a more comprehensive approach to learning. It's not just about letting children learn at their own pace, but also equipping educators with tools to address specific challenges, be it in communication, behavior, or social interactions.

This integration at Capers Montessori allows us to honor each child's individual journey while also providing specialized support to help them navigate any hurdles. It's about creating a learning environment where every child, regardless of their challenges, finds a place to thrive.
